In 2012 we received funding from Creative Scotland to offer the first apprenticeships for deaf, deafened or hard of hearing young people to work Solar Bear and other organisations within the arts.

The initial apprenticeship was for 16 months and was in partnership with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as part of their reserach for the BA Degree Course.

The two Apprentices worked with an Apprenticeship Scheme Mentor to plan a variety of placements and visits as well as taking part in deaf theatre skills at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Solar Bear.

Bea Webster is our new Apprentice for 2015/16.

Bea will be working with the team in the office to learn skills in theatre practice and administration. She will also be out and about visiting organisations and spreading the word about the work of Solar Bear and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The scheme is run in partnership with Creative and Cultural Skills and City of Glasgow College.

Bea Webster

Bea is profoundly deaf with a cochlear implant and a BSL user. She is the new theatre apprentice for Solar Bear, and has a big passion for theatre, in particularly accessible theatre. She has been a member of Deaf Youth Theatre for 4 years and Deaf Theatre Skills short course for the past 3 years at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has taken part in many training courses.

She has been in many theatre productions, for example Deaf Youth Theatre’s Branches and Funk ‘N’ Love for The Arches Live. She also has an interest in set design, being involved in the design process for Deaf Youth Theatre’s Birthday of the Infanta, GMAC’s Stargazer and Ink projects, and has delivered workshops to Deaf Young People.

Having volunteered for many organisation in the past (in particularly for Deaf organisations), Bea is committed to making the creative arts accessible to Deaf people.

Here is a link to Bea's vlog which is in BSL and is captioned.
