Erasmus+ Project

13/06/2017

Solar Bear started a project  through the Erasmus + programme with 2 other partners from Romania in 2015.

Our ambition was to connect 15 young D/deaf people from a school in Romania with 15 members of our Deaf Youth Theatre (DYT).

The project was great fun, challenging, eye opening and a chance to make some new life long friends.

The group from Romania were fortunate enough to have 2 visits to Glasgow (October 2015 & 2016) and were hosted by Solar Bear and the DYT participants and in return the DYT participants visited Romania in April 2016.

The project took the form of exchanges, workshops and performances with the aim of supporting young deaf people to participate in the arts and started with an initial visit from representatives of Solar Bear to meet with the partners from Asociatia Window Romania & Teatrul Naţional Craiova in April 2015.

During this visit, Solar Bear met Catalin Baicus and they were very inspired by his work and style.  Catalin then agreed to come over to Scotland in June 2015 and he led an awe-inspiring workshop for a week, working intensively with members of DYT. This work had a huge impact on the group and gave them a taste of what was to come when the two groups came together for the first time.

The groups subsequently met in October 2015, April 2016 and finally in October 2016.  During each visit, the groups got a chance to work together, learn from each other, socialise together, explore each other’s culture and each other’s cities and country.  During each week, the work in progress was shared but each week also contributed towards the creation of a final performance in the final exchange week in October 2016.

The final piece of work was played to a live audience and live streamed on Facebook.

Finally, all partners disseminated their work, their learning and the project aims and ambitions at the start of 2017.  All the outcomes of the project are available on the project website  www.nowordsart.com.
