Adam Hobson talks about working with Deaf Youth Theatre

We have been delighted to have Adam Hobson, a Drama Teacher at Elderbank Primary school, observing Deaf Youth Theatre for the last few months.

Adam has a passion for inclusive and accessible theatre having previously worked as an Integration Officer with Borderline Theatre Company and Performing Arts Manager with South Ayrshire Council.

In his current role as a Drama Teacher, Adam works with both D/deaf and hearing children developing drama and communication skills. To enhance his ability to teach Adam undertook a beginners course in British Sign Language and reached out to Solar Bear seeking to learn "best practice" when developing theatre shows with D/deaf young people.

“The Deaf Youth Theatre actors have made me most welcome and are very patient with my poor attempts at finger spelling. I have really enjoyed their creativity in rehearsals, how they organise and construct new ideas to become funny and thought provoking drama. I am really looking forward to the rest of my time with Solar Bear and taking back what I learn to the children I teach in Elderbank Primary School.”

We were delighted that Adam was able to attend some of the Deaf Youth Theatre workshops. One of the core goals at Solar Bear is to educate, train, collaborate and empower people working not only with D/deaf artists but anyone that needs support or has ambition to get involved in bringing marginalised  communities into the arts.

We wish Adam, good luck with the young actors at Elderbank Primary school and I am sure we will see some of them on the big screen in the future.
