Solar Bear Artistic Director Gerry Ramage delivers keynote speech to Scottish Council on Deafness Conference

On Thursday 12 March, at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Solar Bear Artistic Director, Gerry Ramage addressed the delegates attending the Scottish Council on Deafness inaugural conference. Gerry was asked to speak about Solar Bear and the work that the company is doing to make the arts, and theatre in particular, more accessible and inclusive with particular reference to the deaf, deafened and hard of hearing.

Gerry informed the conference about the ground-breaking work he and the team at Solar Bear have achieved in a relatively short space of time and about the exciting collaboration with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in training deaf actors that has now led to the introduction of the first BA Degree course in Performance in BSL & English that will commence in September 2015. Applications are now open for this course and recruitment has begun.

Gerry also talked about the collaborative work the company with many arts venues across Scotland in delivering Deaf Awareness Training and running Deaf Theatre Club events to help break down barriers to attendance for the deaf community. This initiative was developed initially in partnership with the National Theatre of Scotland, and has now become an important core part of Solar Bear’s work.
