Solar Bear is proud to announce Klarissa Webster as the Film and Screen Lead Officer — a brand-new role that marks a groundbreaking step for the industry. Klarissa is the first deaf leader in Scotland’s screen sector, taking the helm to address the critical lack of deaf talent and representation both in front of and behind the camera.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between Screen Scotland and Solar Bear, aiming to create more opportunities for deaf filmmakers and foster a more inclusive industry.
‘ I am really excited to be joining the amazing team at Solar Bear! I feel so passionate about Solar Bear and this new project and can’t wait to get started. I am especially looking forward to encouraging the much needed conversations between the Deaf community and the screen industry; striving to make the industry more inclusive and understanding.’ Klarissa Webster (Solar Bear, Film & Screen Lead Officer).
Klarissa has an exciting to-do list ahead! She will lead outreach conversations, workshops, and consultations with both the deaf community and the screen industry. Her work includes developing resources to create a roadmap and highlight opportunities for deaf talent, expanding and developing Solar Bear’s Film School – Solar Reels, and embedding equality, diversity, and inclusion throughout every stage of the talent pipeline.
‘Solar Bear are delighted to welcome Klarissa Webster into our brand new role of Film and Screen Lead Officer. As we continue to create pathways into the screen industry for deaf professionals, showcasing deaf stories and driving change in the wider industry this role will be pivotal in moving the dial for deaf professionals, deaf communities, and the hearing film industry. Klarrisa is a talented artist who joined us in our pilot Solar Reels Film School 2023 and brings a wealth of experience and creativity, that will be instrumental in developing our future plans.’ Jennifer Bates (Solar Bear, CEO/Creative Director)
